Edna Adan Ismail is a nurse, midwife, United Nations diplomat, French Legion of Honour holder and former Foreign Minister of Somaliland.
Edna is the director and founder of the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Hargeisa, Somaliland.
Edna was the former Foreign Minister of Somaliland. Edna Adan was the only woman minister in the Somaliland government until July 2006. She also served as Somaliland's Minister of Family Welfare and Social Development in 2002.
Edna Adan built the first charity Maternity Hospital in Somaliland. The hospital opened in 2002. It is now a regional referral and teaching hospital for nurses, midwives, laboratory technician, pharmacists and medical students.
In 2011, Newsweek included her in the list of the 150 Women Who Shake The World.
