Emma Bonino

Former Italian Foreign Minister

Emma Bonino is an experienced parliamentarian, humanitarian, human rights campaigner and women’s rights advocate. She was elected to Italy’s parliament in 1976 and has served in it or the European parliament ever since, except from 1994 to 1999 when she was European commissioner for humanitarian aid. In that role, she managed the EU’s Emergency Aid Programme (ECHO), organised the Humanitarian Summit in Madrid in 1995 and drew the world’s attention to the crises in the Great Lakes region and the Balkans. She led the campaign to set up the International Criminal Court and actively campaigns on women’s rights in Africa.
