Kevin Bales is the co-founder of Free the Slaves, an NGO that frees slaves, helps former slaves stay free, lobbies governments and corporations for policy change and carries out research. He is the author of numerous books including Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy (1999), an investigation into slave-based businesses in five countries, and Ending Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves (2007), which in 2011 won the $100,000 Grawemeyer Prize for ideas that promote world order. Bales is professor of contemporary slavery at the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation, University of Hull.
