Christy Turlington Burns is a model, writer, mother, entrepreneur, public speaker, maternal health and public health advocate and documentary filmmaker. Born to a Central American mother, she has supported efforts to rebuild post-war El Salvador since the 1990s. After losing her father to lung cancer, she campaigned on smoking prevention and cessation, launching the award-winning website SmokingIsUgly.com in 2002. In 2005, she became a maternal health advocate for CARE and (RED). Five years later, she directed and produced the documentary No Woman, No Cry about global maternal health and launched Every Mother Counts, a campaign to reduce maternal mortality worldwide.
